This beautiful orchid was formerly a reasonably widespread plant across northern England particularly the limestone area of the Yorkshire Dales. But by the late 20th century it had declined to just a single plant! Perhaps the most exquisite of the Ladys Slipper Orchids it boasts downy leaves and flower stems topped by 1-3 blooms whose sepals and petals are maroon (rarely green) and often spirally twisted.
